How to Seat Your Wedding Guests

Wedding Seating is one of the last things every couple tends to do in the wedding planning process. If you are not doing open seating, then it is also one of the most painstaking processes as well. I remember when my husband and I were planning our wedding; it took many Google docs and revisions to get our seating just right. Below are some tips to help you with one of the most time consuming tasks in your planning process.

Identifying Relationships

One of the ways we made our seating process easier was breaking down our guest list and making separate lists for family, college friends, church friends, etc. This way it'll be easier to sort the list and make more logical table arrangements.

Start Early

As much as I love to plan, I love to make sure I start early and meet my deadlines. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! Chances are if you're using a reception venue, they will want escort cards a week or two before your wedding. This does not mean you should wait until then to get started. Try to get your seating done early so it is one less thing to worry about AND you'll be able to easily fix and address any hiccups that come (and they will come) your way.

I'm a visual learner so it helped me to write things out on paper so I can see where I put my guests. If you're like me it might help creating circles and writing your guests names inside or using post-its a la Monica from Friends.

Avoiding Tension

You may have a situation where certain family members can not be at the same table. Maybe they haven't seen or spoken to each other in years. Maybe you have college friends who aren't in the same circle or just don't get along. Think about these relationships before you start your seating chart so you can take them into consideration and not be in a situation where you have to sit them together.

If you have friends who you know haven't seen each other in a long time facilitate a reunion by sitting them together. It will give them an opportunity to catch up with each other.
