How To Negotiate With Wedding Vendors

May 1, 2018

Full disclosure-- I love a good deal. I'm the type of person who will buy the same shirt in different colors just because it's on sale. This isn't any different when it comes to wedding or event planning. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE wants to make sure they are getting the most for their money. However, there is definitely a right and wrong way to negotiate. Scroll down to see my tips on how to negotiate in order to have your wedding fit your budget a little better.

Be mindful of what you ask for

You can only negotiate so much with a wedding vendor so you need to prioritize what is really important to you. In addition, there are only certain things that are up for negotiation because of lot of the prices you are given are fixed.  For example, there probably isn't much wiggle room on a price per head for food. However, what you can do is look at different menu options. If you can't offer an expensive entree, talk to the caterer about alternatives that work within your budget.

Honesty is the BEST policy

Above everything else you must  remember to be honest and respectful. Instead of asking for an immediate discount, start by letting the vendor know how much you love their product or service. Then, be honest and let them know they currently aren't in your budget but you would be willing to work with them if they were open to it. A lot of the time a vendor, will try to customize their packages and try to work with you in order to fit your budget.

Timing

Booking earlier is always a better option but make sure to consider what time of year your wedding falls on. For example, asking a photographer to lower their hours in June may be harder to do than it would be in the first week of December or January.  June is the peak of wedding season and the photographer could easily book their minimum package in June compared to December. Although, this isn't to say that it can't be done.
