How to Get Your Wedding License


With all the components of wedding planning, it can be easy to overlook the actual marriage license. So where do you start?

The first best bet might be the most obvious-- the internet. Most states, if not all, will have a website with tons of information on what is required and the office's contact information.

Once you know where you'll be getting married (the city, county, and district) you'll be able to identify where to receive your license. It might be the clerks office, city hall, or the marriage license bureau.

It is incredibly important be aware of your timing. Some states require a waiting period between giving the license and when your actual wedding will take place. In addition, most marriage licenses are valid for a certain period of time which means you'll need to have the ceremony, sign, and file the license for a marriage license or certificate.

The requirements needed will vary state by state but they will all want to confirm that you have the necessary identification, that you aren't currently married, and that you are legally of age to marry.

Most will require:

- A valid birth certificate

- If you're underage, parental consent

- Photo ID (driver's license, passport, or state ID)

-Proof of citizenship and/or residence
